I've found a great in-between:

We buy this stuff, which is almost nothing but tomato (it has a bit of onion and garlic powder). Then, we saute some onions and garlic, brown some meat, add the sauce, stir in some tomato paste (or red pepper paste, which we got from Turkey!) and fresh basil, salt, and pepper. Voila! Delicious spaghetti sauce that doesn't need to sit around simmering for hours. It is delicious right away. Yummmmm!
PS: Last time, Chris added mushrooms, which made it even better!
